British oil major Shell on Thursday reported that quarterly profits more than doubled from the same period last year, but lower refining and trading revenues brought an end to its run of record earnings. Shell posted adjusted earnings of $9.45 billion for the three months through to the end of September, meeting analyst expectations of $9.5 billion according to Refinitiv. 
The company posted adjusted earnings of $4.1 billion over the same period a year earlier and notched a whopping $11.5 billion for the second quarter of 2022. The oil giant said it planned to increase its dividend per share by around 15% for the fourth quarter 2022, to be paid out in March 2023. It also announced a new share buyback program, which is set to result in an additional $4 billion of distributions and is expected to be completed by its next earnings release. Shares of Shell rose 3% during morning deals in London. The firmâs stock price is up over 42% year-to-date.

Exxon Mobil Corp (US.XOM) and Shell Plc (US.SHEL) on Thursday confirmed the sale of their California oil joint-venture Aera to German asset manager IKAV for $4 billion, ending a 25-year-long partnership that was one of the state's largest oil producers. 
The Aera sale fits a strategy of focusing investments "in low-cost-of-supply oil and natural gas to meet consumer demand and create value for our shareholders," said Liam Mallon, president of Exxon's Upstream Company.

Shell (US.SHEL) said on Wednesday it would start building a renewable hydrogen plant in the Netherlands, which according to the energy giant will be Europe's largest once it is operational in 2025. Shell said the 200 megawatt electrolyser, named Holland Hydrogen I, in the port of Rotterdam would produce up to 60,000 kilograms of renewable hydrogen per day. 
The London-based company, which aims to become a net zero greenhouse gas emissions company by 2050, has been boosting low-carbon output as it shifts away from oil and gas. Shell said it aims to produce hydrogen at the plant using electricity generated by the offshore wind park, Hollandse Kust Noord, which it partly owns. 
Renewable and low-carbon hydrogen is crucial in curbing emissions, but it will only account for 5% of the global final energy mix by 2050, falling short what is needed to meet climate goals, global energy consultancy DNV said last month.

Shell Plc became the latest international energy company to invest in Qatarâs $29 billion liquefied natural gas project, clinching a 6.25% stake as Europe races to secure new supplies of the fuel.

The Persian Gulf nation is one of a handful of countries ramping up capacity as gas buyers jostle for supplies in a bid to reduce dependence on Russia. 
Shell Chief Executive Officer Ben van Beurden announced the deal alongside Qatari Energy Minister Saad Al-Kaabi in Doha on Tuesday, without disclosing financial terms. Despite the rush to invest -- ConocoPhillips and Eni SpA have also secured stakes -- the project wonât send out its first LNG cargoes until 2026, meaning Europe will have to tap other sources for now.

West Texas Intermediate traded above $110 a barrel in Asia after a long holiday weekend in the US. The benchmark is more than 1% higher than Fridayâs close as there was no settlement on Monday. Key market timespreads remain robust, indicating that thereâs solid demand for near-term supplies. 
Citigroup Inc. warned in a note that crude could plunge to $65 a barrel by year-end if a recession hits and demand sinks, although the bank cautioned its economists do not expect the US to dip into that kind of slowdown. The crude market remains in backwardation, a bullish structure marked by near-term prices trading above longer-dated ones. 
Brentâs prompt spread -- the difference between its two nearest contracts -- was above $4 a barrel in backwardation on Tuesday, up from about $2.50 a barrel a month ago. Traders are also tracking Chinaâs efforts to contain renewed Covid-19 outbreaks and enable Asiaâs largest economy to reopen fully. That would bolster consumption and offset the drag from slowdowns in the US and Europe. 
In welcome news for Biden, retail gasoline prices in the US have eased from a record above $5 a gallon in mid-June. Pump prices were near $4.80 on Sunday, according to figures from auto club AAA, after dropping for 20 consecutive days in the longest losing run in more than two years.

Gas demand has surged in eastern Australia for heating amid a cold snap and for power generation due to a string of outages at coal-fired plants, sending prices up to around A$40 per gigajoule ($42 per million Btu), four times the normal price.

Shell posted adjusted earnings of $9.1 billion for the three months through to the end of March. That compared with $3.2 billion over the same period a year earlier and $6.4 billion for the fourth quarter of 2021.The company also announced plans to increase its dividend by around 4% to $0.25 per share for the first quarter of the year. Shell reported a sharp upswing in full-year profit in 2021 on rebounding oil and gas prices, with CEO Ben van Beurden hailing it as a âmomentous yearâ for the company.

European oil giants Shell SHEL and BP said they were stepping back further from doing business with Russia, with Shell saying it will immediately halt all spot purchase of crude from the country and will phase out its other trading and business dealings. A spokesman for BP said it wonât enter into new business with Russian entities or business involving Russian ports âunless essential for ensuring security of supply.â
