EasyJetâs (UK.EZJ) shares fell by as much as 4% on 4 July after it announced that its chief operating officer, Peter Bellew, had resigned âto pursue other business opportunitiesâ. The announcement comes at a time of significant upheaval for the low-cost airline, after its recent cancellation of 11,000 flights due to IT issues and labour shortages. Thousands of jobs were cut during the pandemic and, like its competitors, easyJet is struggling to meet the recovery in passenger numbers. easyJet shareholders have had a rocky ride, with the share price falling by nearly 70% from 1270 pence to 400 pence at the start of the pandemic. Having recovered to around 920 pence in the middle of 2021, the share price has since fallen by a further 60% to its current level of around 360 pence.
Revenue increased by over 500% to £1.5 billion, predominantly due to an increase in capacity and removal of travel restrictions. easyJet carried over 23 million passengers in the first half-year, compared to only 4 million in the same period in 2021. Revenue per seat also rose from £37 to £48, with a reduction in the loss per seat from £108 in 2021 to £18 in 2022. This division is expected to contribute £100 million to profit before tax over the next few years. While airlines have not been immune from the soaring fuel prices, easyJet has hedged over 70% of fuel for the second half of the financial year and almost 50% for the following six months. easyJetâs balance sheet was also given a boost with the repayment of £300 million of short-term loans. As a result, net debt reduced from £0.9 billion to £0.6 billion over the last six months.
Delays, cancellations, long lines and lost baggage are plaguing air travel world-wide, as airlines and airports struggle with soaring summer demand and staff shortfalls.

Deliveries of the aircraft, which have a list price of $6.5 billion, will begin in easyJet's 2026 financial year to replace the carrier's older A319 and A320 aircraft, the company said.
Air travel has rebounded strongly since the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions, with European carriers and airports struggling to meet demand.
The airline said it now expected its capacity in the quarter to end-June to be around 87% of 2019 levels, and its fourth quarter to end-September to be around 90%, adding that there would be a cost impact from the disruption. Last month it had said it expected to operate 90% of 2019 this quarter and around 97% in its fourth. 
"While in recent weeks the action we have taken to build in further resilience has seen us continue to operate up to 1,700 flights and carry up to a quarter of a million customers a day, the ongoing challenging operating environment has unfortunately continued to have an impact which has resulted in cancellations," he said.
